Okay, bastards. You think you had me down? You think I haven't been reading? Well... HERE'S a bunch of books that I've finished in the past few months:

"The Path of the Mother" - I love Ammachi. This book got a little fruity at times, but the shining love and radiance of the Holy Mother Ammachi shone through. :-)

"Born Standing Up" - Steve Martin is simply awesome. Totally inspirational book that proves that HARD WORK and being completely devoted to your craft can really take you places that no man hath gone before.

"Diaboliad" - My love for Mikhail Bulgakov already knew no bounds, and now, if there WERE any bounds that I did not know about, they too have been obliterated, and I love him even more boundlessly than before.

"Mary Holmes: Paintings and Ideas" - This woman is one cool character. Great life, beautiful art, and really cool ideas. Holmes was also a big influence of the balloon twister Addi Somekh, who self-published the book.

"Strange Interlude" - A totally awesomely weird play by Eugene O'Neill. Ahead of its time, it deals with all sorts of psychological tomfoolery and some taboo abortion stuff thrown in. Good times.

AND THERE'S MORE! I'll be finished with this MUSIC PUBLISHING book in a couple hours, and of course there is that classic book of sci-fi and humor THE BIBLE that I'm reading, and I know I'm forgetting some stuff from the past few months. Must consult the stacks next to my bed, and in the bathroom, and by the couch, and at my boyfriend's house.

Evangenitals NW Tour Diary Day 1

NW Tour Update: Day 1 - No Scat Please

Six Evangenitals and all our gear got stuffed into a Cruise America RV yesterday morning, and we set off on our Pacific Northwest Tour! Rain and high winds made the trip rather adventurous, and driving a giant RV into San Francisco (North Beach) was friggin' INSANE! Luckily Kristy and Feldman have nerves of steel and managed to not only get us safely to the venue (Grant & Green) for load in, but we even found STREET PARKING for the dang thing that cost us a grand total of $3. Woot!

Big love to our superfan Chester, who was the first person to show up and submitted a request for "Purple Rain", Jeremiah who shuttled the Evangenitals to and fro the RV, Roxie who's new original Rockabilly band "The Rumble Strippers" opened for us, and everyone that came out and made last night a special send-off for our NW Tour.

The most ridiculous, epic moment of the evening award goes to the "rap battle" that ensued when birthday boy Zach got up on stage and started beat-boxing. We then proceed to improv a "remix" of Quee-Queg over his beats. When he requested that the band lay back so he could scat, the game was on. Crockett busted out the rhymes, calling him out for hijacking the mic. "This motherfucker has hijacked the stage! The band's in a rage!"

The Evangenitals have a strict no scat policy. It's a hard limit.

Onward to Oregon! Today we have to confront rains, high winds, and SNOW in the RV. Pray for us. We're taking it slow and steady and will see you on the other side.

Here I am, in the middle of the night, longing for dialogue. Here I am, once again, with that feeling I can't name, a concept that won't yield to definitions, an image that won't be described, an anxiety whose source I can't pinpoint. There are things to discuss, debates to be had, new manifestos to compose... yet all my loved ones and comrades are in bed, asleep, at work, engaged. The idea sits still with me, giving me the stink eye. Some nights you have to go it alone. Indeed.

Hello beautiful soul.

As parts of our dear US and World populations seemingly spiral into a crazed muck of extremism, hatred, and fear... I realize that the act of being in an all-love, all-loving, good time gang called the EVANGENITALS becomes more and more of a passionate political statement.

We the Evangenitals have, I admit, gone over the possibility of changing our name to something more "mainstream" or less "challenging" a few times in the 7+ years we've been making our special brand of music. We've been called the "Best Band Name Ever" by quite a few reviewers, and the "Worst Band Name Ever" a few times, too. Our name alone has opened many doors, and closed some. It has certainly always gotten SOME reaction out of folks when they hear it, and folks tend to remember it.

In all these years I've yet to come up with another simple term, phrase, or slogan that covers the sentiment that is the seed and the guiding principle of our art and our action -- and that is, in short:

* An expansive, relentless love of everyone and everything, from the sublime to the profane.
* A joyous getting down with the all of it all, with no topic being too taboo.
* A fiercely beautiful, holy, and kick ass irreverence for Being.

We are excited to be going into the studio this weekend to be recording more music with which to infect the hearts and minds of the people.

We are excited to be playing a show with THE MORMONS on November 13th, which shall surely raise a few eyebrows, as we're getting a write up in the Pasadena Weekly for that gig. :-)

We encourage and welcome you to do all you can to help spread the good news of the Evangenitals far and wide.

Hi Everyone,

Time Warner turned off our Live Webcast last Friday but we got it back the next day. I'd like to thank the dozen or so people who made generous PayPal donations (in addition to what they already contribute) and helped make that happen. Now I have to hope that the Department of Water and Power doesn't turn off our electricity. Please read the following:

Woodshed audience attendance over the last few months has been very low and I've fallen nearly $9,000 behind in donations needed to pay the Woodshed bills. Yes, things are really desperate here. ATT turned off the Woodshed phone a few weeks ago (about $600 for the past 6 months) I owe Department of Water and Power (over $3,000 for the past few months). They've been working with me allowing me to make payments but I continue to fall behind. It's only a matter of time before they turn me off. The rent is four months ($4,000) behind.

Again, please let me remind you how thankful I am to those of you who have attended Woodshed shows this year, and for making those donations here and on-line. You made it possible for this wonderful community to get this far. I know it may seem unfair coming to you again after you've already given but we are all we have to turn to. If we pull together we can avoid repeated financial crashes.

Our Destiny: No More Bad Gigs

As musicians/healers, it is our destiny to conduct an inward search, and to document it with our music so that others may benefit. As they listen to the music coming through us, they too are inspired to look within. Light is being transmitted and received from soul to soul. Gradually, the planet moves from darkness to light. We as musicians must surrender to the ocean of our inner selves. We must descend deep into that ocean while the sludge of the ego floats on the surface. We let go of our egos and permit the music to come through us and do its work. We act as the instruments for that work.

If we can live in this realization, we will constantly have deep motivation for what is played, never getting stuck in the ungrateful consciousness of good gigs/bad gigs, out-of-tune pianos, low fees, ungracious audiences, and so on. Instead, our minds will be consumed with what a very great privilege it is to be the one selected to deliver the message to others. We will no longer be caught in the mundane world of good music/bad music ("am I playing well?") Instead, our hearts and minds will be focused on the task of remaining empty and alert to receiving this God-inspired information and translating it faithfully, without any coloration from us.

Call to Action - One Ring to Unite them All

In honor of our upcoming show at WORLDFEST (LA's largest Earth Day celebration) we'd like to ask your help with some Evangenitals World Domination -- via the AIRWAVES!!

Some wise and wonderful radio stations out there have seen the light and started to spin tracks from the newest Evangenitals album, the self-titled "Evangenitals" EP. Luckily, I have already gone through the insanely laborious task of finding all the websites and request lines of a bunch of stations currently playing Evangenitals tunes in order to make it as easy as possible for YOU to give them a call/email and request that some MORE of our music be played. (Click here) Debuting at #72 in California, we moved up to #63 in our 2nd week, now we're back down to #70 this week, still topping such illustrious names as Bob Dylan, Buck Owens, and Lucinda Williams. Yowzers! And the college charts (CMJ) are counting the numbers SOON, so if you get on it, we could debut high on there! Let's do this!

So if you make a few phone calls, we may be able to see that number leap a little higher, and perhaps we can reach our longtime goal of someday being #3 WORLDWIDE! :-)

There is a movement underway. All sorts of isolated individuals asserting their accidental individuality in the face of evolutionary necessity, as some wise man once said. It's a crazy little posse we've got forming. Growing in numbers. United in a feeling that can't even be put into words but we signify it by pointing to the banner flying with the L-O-V-E in big 'ol letters made of that gooey stuff that is pumpin' through your guts moments after taking your eyes off the one you're really feeeeeeeeeeeeeeelin' it for, at that moment, whomever they may be, on that day, at that time, in that instant.

The story has been told many times of how I once fell in love with a man riding a bike up a steep hill on a hot day, simply for the effort he was exerting. For the love of his effort. The effortless, too, hath a glowing space in my heart. Yes. Love the effortless, But shit in my shoes, do I ever love effort! Right effort. Right thought. Right practice. In a world without right and wrong? How completely audacious!

Each man is responsible for his own soul, and each to his own, as they say. However – and this is a most fascinating point when one considers it as one should – there is an interplay. An uncontrollable interplay.

It is hard for me to make a sentence go in any one direction lately. Luckily, at least, when reading (in the English language, and a few others I’ve encountered) we move our eyes from left to right, top to bottom, and follow the phrase withersoever it goes. (some poets and word-artists and linguists and fartists have had some other ideas) however, the instinct of the masses remains. The hoi polloi, in general, in the Americas, reads LEFT to RIGHT.

Compare. When listening to another speak -- save for flights of fancy, blank spots, possible drug interference and intentional or unintentional ignoring -- we listen as we live, in real time, experiencing linearity, following the narrative, abstract though the subject matter may be, withersoever it leads. We listen, much like we read. I, personally, both listen and read, and, speaking from my own experience, since that is all I truly have any authority to speak from, can assuredly say that I listen much like I read.

There is an interplay – yet, within it, there is a need for an isolated thought process. A personal inventiveness, which can be viewed as an interaction with the other (though there be no other) be it a person, book, sound, image, or hallucination. Regardless, there is the need for times of quiet in one’s own (common) mind.

Also, we must allot sufficient time for the mutually adventurous to spend time together and create. To breed and compose. Interact. Discuss. Plan. Reflect. The interplay is everything. The one looking at itself as two (or more). Experiencing itself as two (or more).

There is no explaining what has not yet happened to someone who has not yet experienced it.

It is very difficult to merely exist. Practically impossible.

And now, Oh My Lord Don Quixote, all I ask on this night like any other night is the courage to follow, withersoever thou leadest my aching frame; to heed the call of adventure, wheneversoever it heralds, and to love, my dear sweet holy idiot, to love. To cultivate the unconditional giving of self to thy children and plebeians. Thy hoodlums and wackos. Thy dejected, rejected, snotty and shitfaced. Oh lord, sweet lord, daddy of the sugars, momma of the fuckers, sister of the lovesick, brother of the bigness, cousin of the unconscious, uncle of the uglynasties, friend of the faithless, lover of all things just as they are and however they may want to be... give it up. Give it up to us like a 5am jackpot after a long night of pullin' dry on the one armed bandit.

I can see it. It's already happening. It's as ridiculous and pathetic and gorgeous as it can be. The love is raining down, everywhere I'm looking. The sky is falling and it's about time. The rain is helping it all soak in.

We met DJ in Scotland while at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. He directed Cynthia Hopkins' "Accidental Nostalgia" (featuring the band Gloria Deluxe) and the cast and crew of that show made appearances at several Evangenitals gigs. In fact, their fiddle player Philippa Thompson even sat in with us on violin and harmonies at our last show! Glorious deluxe, indeed!!!

It was a love fest, indeed, and the lovin' continues with this cyber-collaborative video.

Julio's Dad was born in Alabama to a family of Lunatics.

Dad was hit by two cars in the same day and had a staple shot into his head. He wrote a book on the history of Alabama, became a history professor, and had affairs with his students. He won 2nd place on Jeopardy but was unable to claim his prize because he hadn't paid child support since the divorce. Dad had an awful temper and would often be sent to his room, by Mom. Mom would make us put ice in his pants to calm him down. He once made scrambled eggs with sugar in them and threw them against the wall. He hid the household bills in shoeboxes that he kept in the closet and recorded porn movies at the end of our cartoon tapes. He tried to make me eat orange peels and hot dogs with peanut butter and cheese because "it all went to the same place anyway." Dad got born-again and wrote a 3000 page novel on the sex life of Jesus Christ. He married a Norweigian woman he met on a cruise ship and moved to Puyallup, Washington where they ran a tuxedo rental business. They would not loan my brother a tuxedo for prom. The new wife fell off a horse, hit her head and went insane. Dad heard Jesus telling him what numbers to play in Vegas. He developed cancer of the lymph nodes and died, right around Christmas time.

The feeling: a sort of reverse-nostalgia.

A bittersweet, memory-like longing for something that hasn't yet happened. The girl you never knew that broke your heart comes to the party in the skin of a woman you've never met... will she ever understand that you already love her? Deeply, truly, thoroughly. Is this love any less valid because it exists in another dimension and has nothing to do with anything real* (*i.e. having any connection to that which actually happened in this lifetime)?

The relationships of the mind, whilst listening to songs, whilst watching the sun go down, whilst watching movies, sitting in the tub, are so full, so beautiful, so sad and perfectly imperfect. Inside of these images of imaginary love affairs, cinematically painful, slowly and quietly intense and dramatic, we always look beautiful when we're crying. Our faces are never red and puffy and pathetic, and if they are, they are adorably so, intensely so, sweetly so.

Pain is a pang, a slide-guitar gut sensation, a minor note felt in the aorta, a heart choke. Eyes blink in the soft light, tears roll down the cheeks, always in slow motion, with a sound track, slow, with ringing harmonics which die away, open tuning, the sound of the metal rattling on the fret. Imperfectly perfect, and slow.

Behind, above, surrounding it all, there is the glowing specter of a heart, full to bursting with love, that grows and grows and grows.

The people-in-general, the hoi polloi, the vox populi go on about their business. Another day, another nickel. Back to work. Me too. Here I am. Senor Cog: Welcome to the Urban Junkyard! Your Civic Duties await you! Please report to the office and place your Cog in the Machine. Although the System runs quite smoothly without You (it is, in and of itself, a self-propagating, self-copulating, self-emulating machine) We sure do like having You around. All is Better Back in Line, waiting for your side-order of fries. Here we Go.

Need to get simple and monosyllabic for a minute. Yes, no, good, yes, ugh.... simple simple. Even simple has two-syllables. Too Many! Need the Ones: Plain. Good. Girl. Boy. Beach. Sky. Sea. Camp. Walk. Sleep. Read. Light. Dark. Beef. Fish. Eat. Love. Joy. God.

It is time to cry. Really cry. Not just weep that bittersweet lovesick weep that's burning in the throat 24/7, but fucking WAIL. Wail to the heavens in a combination of a "thank you!" and "why? fucking why?" A question and an exclamation. Why is she so beautiful? Why can't it last forever? Why would I want it to? Why do I deserve such light? Such feelings? Such a friend?

I love those days when one knows, beyond a doubt, that happiness is right here. Nothing more is needed. I could live in a dirt shack chicken coop, and so long as the face turns toward the sun now and then, happy is here.

And yet, simultaneously, that thought horrifies me.... this is it? this is all you want? this is happiness? no no not enough never never never enough.... I am the bitch of ambition! I am the slave of the self talking mind! I am the hog-tied POW of "not enough" "less than" and "falling short", and am a shit sandwich with a side order of failure and a self pity shake.

Spent a whole lotta time today uploading, rotating, tagging, and titling a bunch of Lisa Dee's pictures from the Evangenitals/Dawn of Quixote quixotic trip to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland. It was super-awesome to get to reflect and remember what an amazing adventure it was, how incredible it is that we pulled the whole thing off, and what a priceless experience was had by all.

I am insanely grateful to these folks for believing it was possible and for their willingness to take that ride. I love these guys and gals.... and I love all the Evangenitals that came before, all who are yet to come, and everyone who has given us their time, attention, and support through the years.

It is a beautiful thing. :-)

On Saturday October 10th the Evangenitals will play our biggest show yet! We are opening for Cash'd Out, the world's premier Johnny Cash tribute band (that Evangenital Juli Crockett sings the June Carter parts with!) at San Diego's BEST live music venue -- The Belly Up!

The incredible Bill Cardinal is also on the bill, and DJ Gonzo will be spinning all the great cowboy classics between sets. The Belly Up is a beautiful venue with amazing sound, an awesome lineup, and a HUGE opportunity for the Evangenitals to shine our light on San Diego.

You may have heard we recently took a PLAY and the BAND to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland! Well, WE DID!

You may have NOT heard the Evangenitals play live in the US recently! That's because WE HAVEN'T!!!

So on THURSDAY OCTOBER 1st we're having a HOOTENANNY POTLUCK to celebrate!

We'll fill your ear holes with music & stories and your eyeballs with smiles & slide shows from our UK travels! You can pick up the new EP and get filled up with Evangenital joy. Good deal, eh?

Improbable Perversion

While eating a handful of small, peeled carrots I noticed a slight slimy and tart residue on one of the morsels. My first (and quite surprising) thought was a mildly panicked "Semen?!"

The improbability of this was immense, as I am a woman living alone and cannot imagine the circumstances in which one could have feasibly ejaculated on my bagged carrots.

The fact that it was my first thought disturbed me. Later I found it amusing. "First thought, best thought."

I'm sitting in this truck stop city somewhere in Portland, Oregon. The place is called "jubitz" and it's a whole town in itself... truck stop, country music venue & dance hall, mini-mall with an arcade, food court, movie theater, a restaurant, hotel... all in a small corner of nowhere, it seems.

Played a show with Cash'd Out here tonight and all was well until I was walking through the hallway and got slammed with a profound wall of sadness that had the peculiar flavor of being NOT MINE. I checked my heart and soul pockets and sure enough, I'm doing fine. No profound loneliness, no deep melancholy... not today... so I've been roving the halls trying to figure out exactly where the "hot spots" are... what residents, current and/or ghostly, are emitting this powerful mood?

I've found the spot. THE spot where the feeling is for sure most intense. And I'm sitting in it. Soaking it up. I think I feel a song coming on. :-)

We made it! 3 weeks in the UK... 7 brave souls... approximately 30 shows later... and we're BACK! Hello America!!! We can't thank you enough for the love and support that carried us overseas. So we'll just keep thanking you every chance we get. Thank you!

It's all still a bit of a blur. We're catching our breath, sorting our photos, and getting ready to burst back onto the scene... or rather, its more of a cheeky jig. We had an amazing adventure over there in Scotland and we've got a ton of stories to share. We'll dish 'em out gently. One at a time.

Cash'd Out at the Viper Room TONIGHT!

Hello there, Los Angeles! I'm pretty terrible at remembering to tell folks when Cash'd Out is playing locally, so I'm sending the shout out now... CASH'D OUT IS PLAYING TONIGHT!

I've got my curlers in and I'm getting ready to head over to the big show. We go on around 10pm, and I'll be channeling June Carter to the best of my ability (and word on the street is my ability to channel June Carter is pretty damn good!)

Our "Johnny Cash" - Douglas Benson - is absolutely incredible. A freak of nature that he was born with the same diaphragm, windpipe, larynx, or whatever the hell it is that makes him sound so much like the Man in Black. It's truly amazing. Come to the show, close your eyes, and you'll think it's the real JC.

So, we're playing at the infamous Viper Room. It should be a real good show... the last few we've done there have rocked the house. I'm wearing one of my new favorite dresses, and I've painting my nails RED for the 1st time, cuz I'm feeling frisky.

Some thoughts on Equality.

The "equal" sign can be understood as a threshold in which one side of an equation is transformed into the other.

Simultaneity. The thing represented on one side is in fact the very same thing represented on the other. Einstein represented this quite simply in his most elegant and famous equation: e=mc2. What this equation indicates is that energy is in fact the very same thing as mass traveling at celestia (the speed of light) squared.

In language, the sign "equal" can be substituted with the word "is" (i.e. 2+2 "is" 4). This equation indicates that there is no difference between "4" and "2+2".... they are the same. 4 is simultaneously both the number 4 as well as 2 and 2, as well as 3 and 1. (Note that as the "equal" can be stated as "is" the "plus" can be stated as "and")

Another example: pick any bit of commonly accepted truth, such as "There are seven days in a week." 7 Days = 1 Week. 1 Week is 7 days. There is no difference between 1 Week and 7 Days. 60 seconds and 1 minute. 60 minutes and 1 hour.

Man and Woman. Equal? Let us make an equation… Man = Woman. Man is Woman. Is there no difference?

Where is this going? What is the point?

I was having a conversation with a Mr. X about equal relationships. Mr. X has always tried to maintain "equal relationships" with his romantic partners. This proved to be not simply ineffective and idealistic, but also, surprisingly, not honest.

The source of the inequality is traceable to the fact that Mr. X is an intelligent and sexually well-endowed and well-adjusted man. Mr. X’s girlfriends tend to be stupid whores. This is to be understood: Mr. X’s girlfriends tend to be stupid and Mr. X’s girlfriends tend to be whores.

Please, for the sake of scientific objectivity, let us view this as a simple fact and not impose a judgment. Mr. X's last girlfriend, god love her, was a wonderful, beautiful, gifted, and amazingly stupid whore.

Here’s where it all went wrong. Mr.X tried to treat her as an equal, intelligent, respectable woman. Whereas, the relationship would have been much more honest and fulfilling had he simply accepted her as she was, recognized that she was a stupid whore, and treated her accordingly. She may have been momentarily shocked at being discovered and recognized for the stupid whore she was, however, if Mr. X was to, for example, grab her by the hair and say: “You are a stupid whore. I love you, you stupid whore. Now I’m going to treat you like the stupid whore you are!” things may have gone swell. She, the amazingly stupid blessed whore, could have gotten everything she wanted had only they both been willing and able to be honest. They could have gotten married and had kids and lived in the bliss of truth and unconditional love.

Mr. X really did love that stupid whore.

There is a lesson to be gleaned from this parable of love. Something to do with "is", "and", and the stupid whore which resides in each of us... may she be loved, honored, accepted, and dealt with accordingly.

Confessions of an Apollonian dream-life within a Dionysian dithyramb. Warning: heartsickness and sappy love songs ensue.

I had a dream the other night that I fell madly in love (and it was the good reciprocal kind of love) with some foolish geeky boy in a popular band.

I don't know what band it was, or what kind of band. It wasn't a real band or referencing a real band. The boy wasn't anyone I know, nor have I ever seen. He was a purely invented dream character. He wasn't that attractive or anything, but for some reason he was crazy about me, and I was crazy about him.

It was doomed from the start. The first time I saw him in the dream he was asleep in a bed with a 15 year old girl. He went on tours and had groupies and all that shit. I knew this. I didn't care. And it wasn't the "not caring" of the blind denial and defiance variety (i.e. this is fucked but maybe, maybe, maybe he'll change and/or it'll work out this time fucking insanity) but the not caring of full awareness, acceptance, and a two-fisted embrace of the Moment. I knew it was only gonna last for a little while, and that was okay. In the dream, I knew we had two weeks. And this was good enough. It was worth it. I wasn't concerned with tomorrow or the future or what it means and will we get married and how will it work. When he showed up in the dream, I was overjoyed and it was fun and wonderful. When he went away, the dream went on in other directions. I wasn't forlorn and lonely and scared and suspicious and fearful... I was simply doing whatever I was doing.

It was a good dream.

Permission was granted to be in love for a while last night, in my sleep. It was one of the greatest dreams I've had in a long time. Simple. The magical thing about it was the feeling. It was so good. I got to have that feeling you get when you're just crazy about somebody, and you know they're crazy about you, and you're not sweating the future of what it means or what it will be. You're just filled with light, and letting the love out with total abandon and there's a feeling of so much fucking joy you think you'll burst. The feeling was so fragile and vulnerable, but in a playful way. Like a shining wet bubble, it had a short but glorious life span, and the whole thing just passed by like the sound of a distant giggle on the breeze. A most glorious dream.

I've been working a lot on cultivating fearlessness when it comes to matters of the heart. I'm sick and tired of feeling shame, shame, shame. All the time, for no reason, or for good reason. Whatever the reason, I'm done.

I asked Jesus in George Marshall chatbot what love was... and this is what that AI muthafucka had to say:

"Sometimes I think love is just a biological urge. Other times it seems like a spiritual quality. Love, unlike energy or matter, seems limitless."

I love this world... however...

I am reaching a wall, a serious roadblock, in my ability to communicate and my fear of intimacy with the world at large. I hide. I have been having strong desires to place my head in a door jam and slam the door on my head until it is a bloody mess. I'm not kidding. I am hungry for the real and am doubting everything in my mind... I have got to get through this fear. Fear of being an idiot, fear of having nothing to say, fear of opening my mouth and having nothing to offer but puke and farting noises. It must be okay. Fail better, more, with joy. Fail. Shamelessly.

My physicist friend says that I lack faith. Faith that there is something for me here, now... in this dimension.

Belief in Transcendence is an insult to what is.

I am a big phony and I hide behind revolutionary and dangerous SOUNDING ideas that I am very comfortable with... just as I became a master of self-derogatory humor to pull off the seeming appearance of Radical Honesty without having to get to close to my true self. I have built walls around my thoughts and feelings and I am working on busting 'em up. I need help. I need correspondence. And I need to stop having any desire to impress others in any way, so I will admit, up front, that I am a fool. And I'm not saying that to be cool. I am a selfish ass. I know this.

I also suffer from profound spiritual hunger. But I am too much of a coward to sacrifice myself completely to the immolating flames of humility. The smashing of ego is the most painful prospect ever... August Strindberg described it as "spiritual suicide."

i woke up this morning all a'glow with excitement to hit the road for a cash'd out show tonight. this is a good thing, cuz there is always a 50/50 chance, it seems, that i can view a situation either as a great opportunity or a total pain in the ass. :-)

TODAY i'm feeling good. perhaps this is because it's day 3 of my birthday challenge. perhaps it's because i just had a full day by myself in my own house to hang out in my underwear and do yoga in the living room. perhaps it's because i had a fantastically intimate and wonderful talk with my best friend miss lisa dee last night. perhaps it's a lot of things. perhaps it's because my heart is bursting with a love i can't control, and don't really want to. perhaps, perhaps.

the main awesomeness is that i am making a living (meager though it may be) making ART in one form or another and TODAY i get to crawl into the cash'd out van and drive to San Luis Obispo to PERFORM. and then I get to do it all again tomorrow!

upon my return, i've got quixote rehearsals, evangenitals rehearsals, and now I have the honor and privilege of playing the upright bass in odious ari's awesome ensemble! it's a wonderful life.

my 34th year on earth is right around the corner and it feels like my blooms are blossoming. i feel good. i feel strong. my heart is getting some massive exercise in the ways of FEELING. i am that i am, and it's awesome.

life is a gift, and i feel that in my bones. i say thank you thank you thank you and yes, yes, and always yes.

Birthday Countdown

Today I commence my "Birthday Countdown Challenge"

I, Juli Crockett, hereby declare that I will do my yoga, pilates, mediation, and bass practice EVERY DAY betwixt July 1st & August 1st, the day of my entry into the breathing world (this lifetime).

I gotta get READY for the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. For 2 - 3 gigs a DAY for 2 weeks straight! For playing upright bass (or possibly guitarron) in the orchestra of my own sweet play, The Dawn of Quixote! For being 34 years old and having the time of my friggin' LIFE! I gotta SHAPE UP before we SHIP OUT to Scotland!!!

While I focus on that, perhaps y'all could help me raise enough money to house and feed my cast and band while we're in Scotland? This has been an exhausting week, and awesome. Had two really good fundraisers for our Edinburgh trip (House Party & Yard Sale) and the Kickstarter action is starting to pick up. We're coming up on 2 weeks left till our deadline, and we're a little over 25% of the way to the goal.

We're whipping the show into shape for our big Castle Green fundraiser. My MOM is coming to town to help out. We're trying to figure out all this crazy new stuff like how to rent amps and upright basses for our shows in the UK. We've got gigs booked in London, Glasgow, and Edinburgh for the band... it's unbelievable. Such an exciting time. It's hard for me to really wrap my mind around the fact that it's all HAPPENING. And it's all happening NOW.

In the midst of it all, I got a ton of shows with Cash'd Out before we leave. Busy, overstuff, jalapeno popper good times.

Matt Ticciati (new bass player) from Fairfield, Iowa has proven to be a HUGE blessing... he's been instrumental (no pun intended) in helping compose the original score for the Dawn of Quixote.

I'm doing a radio interview early Tuesday morning on "the voice of Fairfield and beyond" KRUU 100.1 FM for the Lyrical Venus show (http://www.lyricalvenus.com). The host, Heather, is a friend of both Ticciati and Evangenitals drummer David Hurlin, who also hails from that zany TM town. In addition to all THAT action, I picked up the our new Evangenitals bass player who will be filling in for our dearly beloved Keith Lubow who is going to be pursuing other creative goals at this time. Glory be! We the Evangenitals always support the following of one's heart and passions! ONWARD!

His name is Matt Ticciati, and he's a former band mate of our drummer, David Hurlin, ALSO of Iowa.

They were in a wild funk band called "Spermwhale" (http://www.myspace.com/spermwhaleband) back on that side of nation, and as fate would have it, 3 of 4 members of Spermwhale now reside in the greater LA area! Do you smell a reunion in the air???

Matt has heard the call of adventure and left his native Iowa to come and try his luck with the Evangenitals!

Lisa Dee came over and we made some boss vegan stir-fry. After dinner, we played Evangenitals songs into the wee hours of the night. It was a great 1st rehearsal. :-)

Tomorrow night he meets the FULL band down at Bedrock Studios and Echo Park, and FRIDAY night he meets the PUBLIC!

We're playing a 2 hour in-store at Rhino Records in Claremont on Friday from 8-10pm, and Saturday we're playing the Rose City Rocks Music Festival in Pasadena (Old Town Pub stage) at 4pm. It's a whirlwind, and he's getting jumped in.

From the way things went tonight, I'd say he's gonna be A-OK! ;-)

Small Steps

I bought a brand of toilet paper tonight called "Small Steps".... what they MEAN by "small steps" is that, being recycled toilet paper, it is a small step toward healing the planet.

What *I* think about while using it is that it is somehow some sort of toilet training tool for tots.... as that is what "small steps" in relation to anything toilet-related makes me think of, it seems. :-)

Strange Fruit

This is an odd time for me. One of those periods where so much is going on, yet it feels like Nothing is happening. (Nothing IS happening!!)

I'm on the road back to LA from a weekend playing with Cash'd Out in Vegas. The opera I'm directing goes into Tech Rehearsals this week up at CalArts and its super-long days and nights of rehearsal until that's over.

Immediately after the opera closes, I hit the road to San Fran, Portland, and Seattle with Cash'd Out.

I've had a stinky cold and cough for weeks, and sang a bunch of shows (and recorded a tune with the Evangenitals!) in this sad state.

I'm so friggin' excited about all the new music the Evangenitals have been recording, our new website that's in the works, and the prospect of some bigger and better gigs. Although the transition time is KILLING ME!!! I'm a real momentum addict, and its hard for me to stay focused during all this "behind the scenes" work and not get freaked out by our empty calendar. I love to PLAY, and if I could I'd wanna do it every day. We're trying to actually execute some semblance of a STRATEGY, though, and that requires some patience... A virtue which I paradoxically seem to have a ton of and none at all, simultaneously.

My mom recently came out for a visit, and that was awesome. I've been watching episodes of Deadwood, which I friggin' LOVE, I'm re-reading Unamuno's Sepulchre of Don Quixote and considering writing my first Philosophical Essay for publication on "blinking"... Which is exciting. I'm going back to Improv classes when the opera is over to finish the program at iO WEST. I'm missing New York and loving LA. I'm nostalgic for the future. I'm impregnating my own brain and about to bloom. Strange fruit coming into season.

Quiet before the Storm

There's been a hell of a lot going on in my world lately. But somehow it doesn't really FEEL like it. I've discovered a strange equation... if the Evangenitals aren't doing a lot of shows, then I don't feel like anything is HAPPENING. :-)

The FACTS are quite contrary. In many ways, I've never been busier. I'm directing an opera, performing in Cash'd Out, in rehearsal or recording or band practice or traveling every single day of the week. But it's not all the Evangenitals, so much of it doesn't seem real. Weird, huh?

The Evangenitals have just recorded our best music thus far, and it's being mixed and mastered as we speak. We're stepping into the studio once again on Sunday for ONE MORE SONG that's going to be used in a video for The 1 Second Film that's going to make even the hardest hearts feel all squishy inside. We're working on a new website that is looking GOOD and a new logo that makes me feel truly understood as a human and an artist. It's freaking great!

Alas, much of that work is all BEHIND THE SCENES, though, and I'm dying to get it all our THERE into the WORLD to SHARE it with all of YOU!!!!

Don Short and I founded Heroes For Autism in November, and together with many other people, we have been working night and day to produce something really special. I honestly feel it’s the best work I’ve done, and I’m proud to share it with you.

I've been looking at websites for the past 5 hours and I'm tired as hell. The Evangenitals are working on a wild new website to launch with our super-awesome new EP that we're working on, and I decided to take a trek through cyber-space to see what some of my favorite bands were doing, as well as some of my not-so-favorite bands who happen to be getting a sh!t-ton of traffic. :-)

Many a website hath passed before my moist eye holes in the past few horas. On the "bands I love" roster, there's David Byrne's really cool site, the B52's semi-awesome colorful site, Ween's new "cleaned-up" site, Gogol Bordello's insane den of navigation, Devendra Banhart's incredibly frustrating but kind fun front page, LOW's clean-cut mormon temple of cyberspace, Shitake Monkey's awesome corner of wilderness that I could get lost in for a good while, Weezer's straightforward business, and Beck's completely baffling art piece (that keeps re-directing me to the current album site).

Britney Spears has the highest traffic band website in the friggin' WORLD, it seems. It's a bit of a mess with ads and such, but has a personal feel, decent layout, and the whole she-bang is powered by Buzznet. The next most popular site, so far as I can tell from Alexa, is U2. A much cleaner aesthetic, emphasis on black, gray, and red. Decent.

And while we're on the U2 tip... I'm kinda reeling from their usage of a Sugimoto photo for their new album. I friggin' LOVE Sugimoto with the quiet intensity of a deceptively dormant volcano that's about to burst on an unsuspecting village. I have not yet forgiven Bono for his appearance in that "Across the Universe" movie impersonating some Ken Kesey wannabe and singing "I Am The Walrus".... that movie was completely ludicrous and made me want to chew off my own toes. I actually had a dream the other night wherein I was telling Julie Taymor just HOW awful I thought the film was. This, of course, would be truly bad form in REAL life as we are on the Board of Directors for the Collaboration Foundation. Bottom line is that the film has truly scarred me in some deep way that I don't yet understand. Perhaps I'm just still in shock and it was actually brilliant. Doubtful, but possible... and it's always a fine idea (for me) to suspend any final judgment, as my mind frequently changes along with my moods. If I saw the movie on whilst on the rag, I'm sure I'd love it. And cry :-)

Playing Musical Life

I'm at the Good Hurt in Venice, watching Evangenitals bassist Keith Lubow play REALLY LOUD old punk with his *other* band, The Bloody Brains. I got out here early in a beat-the-traffic carpool scenario with Evangenitals drummer David Hurlin and we passed the pre-show time perusing fine used books in the Sam Johnson bookshop, right across the street from the Good Hurt. I found a stash of incredible Swedenborg books, which brought back memories of my obsession with August Strindberg back when I was at CalArts.

Earlier today, I got the keys for the Evangenitals new 24/7 lockout rehearsal space in Echo Park at the newly built (and still under construction), sure to be hot-spot Bedrock Studios. Its an exciting time for the Evangenitals... Or course, aint it always?

This past weekend we laid down 6 tracks for a new demo. Listening to the unfinished mixes, I'm already excited as hell. We recorded with Tracy Chisholm at Del Boca Vista studios in South Pasadena, and the whole band now has the recording bug. I'm thinking the Moby Dick EP is our next move, and soon. It was a total joy to spend ridiculously long hours in the studio with the gang, and I can't wait to do more more MORE!!!

Its awesome to be here in support Keith in his "loud" band... in which he is the youngest member by a good 30 year margin. I am really glad I brought earplugs, as I want to keep my hearing orbs in good shape for a long, long time whilst we skip down the wild and wonderful road of this musical life. :-)
